Filing your Income-Tax Return is only half the job. Until you verify it, the department treats the return as unsigned — and an unsigned return is an invalid return. Every year, lakhs of taxpayers file on time but forget this second step. Here is everything about ITR verification for AY 2026-27: the methods, the deadline, and the fix if you missed it.
Quick answer: To e-verify your ITR for AY 2026-27, log in to incometax.gov.in, go to e-File > e-Verify Return, and complete verification within 30 days of filing. The fastest method is Aadhaar OTP; other options include EVC via a pre-validated bank or demat account, net banking, bank ATM, DSC, or sending the signed ITR-V by speed post to CPC Bengaluru. An unverified return is treated as not filed.
What does e-verifying your ITR mean?
When you upload your ITR on the income-tax portal, the return is only submitted. The department still needs your signature to accept it. E-verification is that signature, given electronically. It confirms the return under your PAN was actually filed by you or with your knowledge.
Without verification, the return sits in “pending” status. No processing happens, no refund is issued, and legally the return is treated as not filed under Section 139(1) of the Income-tax Act, 1961.
One point that confuses people this year: returns for AY 2026-27 are still governed by the Income-tax Act, 1961, even though the new Income-tax Act, 2025 came into force on 1 April 2026. So the familiar section numbers — 139, 234F, 234A — are the correct ones for this year’s returns.
What is the 30-day e-verification rule?
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) issued Notification No. 5/2022 on 29 July 2022, cutting the verification window from 120 days to 30 days. The 30-day clock starts on the date you transmit the return on the portal. If you choose the physical route, the postmark (dispatch) date of your signed ITR-V counts as the verification date.
The rule took effect on 1 August 2022 and is still in force for AY 2026-27. Verify within the 30 days and your original filing date stands — so a return filed on the deadline day but verified a week later is still an on-time return.
ITR e-verification in numbers
- 7.8 crore+ ITRs were filed for AY 2026-27 as of 31 August 2026, the Income Tax Department announced on 1 September 2026 — up from about 7.3 crore last year. Every one of those returns needed verification to count.
- 120 days to 30 days — the verification window was cut to a quarter of its old size by CBDT Notification No. 5/2022.
- 31 July 2026 was the deadline for most salaried individuals; 31 August 2026 for non-audit business and professional taxpayers, under the revised schedule in the Finance Act, 2026. Belated returns can still be filed till 31 December 2026 — and each needs e-verification too.
- 7 verification routes exist: six electronic plus the signed ITR-V by post.
How to e-verify your ITR: all 7 verification methods
1. Aadhaar OTP (fastest)
- Log in to the income-tax e-filing portal.
- Go to e-File > Income Tax Return > e-Verify Return.
- Select the unverified return and click e-Verify.
- Choose Aadhaar OTP. An OTP goes to the mobile number linked with your Aadhaar.
- Enter the OTP and confirm.
Requirement: your PAN must be linked with Aadhaar, and the Aadhaar-linked mobile number must be active.
2. EVC through a pre-validated bank account
- On the portal, go to My Profile > Pre-validate your bank account and complete the one-time validation.
- On the e-Verify Return page, choose Generate EVC through bank account.
- The EVC is sent to the mobile number and email registered with that bank account.
- Enter the EVC on the portal to finish verification.
The code is for one return only and expires in a short time — typically 15 minutes or less.
3. EVC through a pre-validated demat account
The flow mirrors the bank-account method: pre-validate the demat account on the portal, generate the EVC, and enter the code sent to the mobile number registered with your demat account. Only works if the demat account is already linked on the portal.
4. Net banking
- After filing, click Verify ITR via Net-Banking.
- Select your bank from the list and log in with your net-banking credentials.
- Authorise the e-verification request.
The portal receives an automatic confirmation — no code to type.
5. Bank ATM (offline)
Select banks (including SBI, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank) offer this:
- Swipe your ATM card and enter your PIN.
- Select the income-tax e-verification option.
- Enter the acknowledgement number of the filed return.
- The EVC is generated and sent to your registered mobile number.
No internet connection is needed at the ATM.
6. Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)
Mandatory for companies and for taxpayers whose accounts are required to be audited:
- First register your DSC on the portal under My Profile > Register DSC.
- On the e-Verify Return page, choose the DSC option.
- Sign with your DSC when prompted.
The DSC provides a legally recognised electronic signature.
7. Signed ITR-V by speed post (the offline route)
If you prefer paper:
- After filing, download the ITR-V acknowledgement slip from the portal.
- Print it and sign in the designated box.
- Post it — by ordinary or speed post — to:
Centralised Processing Centre (CPC),
Income Tax Department, Bengaluru – 560500
- The date of dispatch counts as the verification date for the 30-day rule.
Send only the signed ITR-V. Do not attach annexures or supporting documents.
You can also e-verify without logging in
If you cannot log in to the portal, use the pre-login option on the e-filing homepage: click e-Verify Return under Quick Links, then enter your PAN, assessment year, the acknowledgement number of the filed return, and a mobile number. Choose your verification method and follow the prompts.
What changed, and what stayed the same
What changed:
- The verification window dropped from 120 days to 30 days with Notification 5/2022 (effective 1 August 2022). This is the single biggest change in recent years.
- The return-filing schedule itself was revised by the Finance Act, 2026: 31 July 2026 for most individuals, 31 August 2026 for non-audit business and professional taxpayers.
What stayed the same:
- All seven verification routes are unchanged.
- OTP/EVC codes are still unique to each return and expire quickly.
- The CPC Bengaluru address and the dispatch-date rule for the post route are unchanged.
- AY 2026-27 returns still run on the 1961 Act’s section numbers (139, 234F, 234A) — the new Income-tax Act, 2025 applies from the next assessment year.
What happens if you don’t e-verify within 30 days?
1. Your filing date moves. The return is treated as furnished on the date you finally verify it. An on-time return can quietly become a belated one.
2. Section 234F late fee can apply. If total income is up to Rs 5,00,000, the fee is Rs 1,000; above that, Rs 5,000.
3. Section 234A interest can apply. Interest of 1% per month (or part of a month) on the tax payable, calculated from the original due date that applied to you (31 July 2026 for most individuals) until the verification date.
4. If you never verify, the return is invalid. It is treated as not furnished at all — as if you never filed.
5. There is a recovery route: condonation. If the 30 days have passed, you can file a condonation request on the portal under Services > Condonation Request, explaining the reason for the delay with supporting proof. The department may accept or reject it — acceptance is not automatic.

Practical tips so you never miss it
- Verify the same day you file. Aadhaar OTP takes about two minutes. There is no reason to wait.
- Keep your Aadhaar-linked mobile number current. A dead number blocks the OTP entirely.
- Check your status. After filing, go to e-File > e-Verify Return — the portal shows whether each return is Verified, Pending or Failed.
- Postal route? Dispatch immediately. The postmark date is what counts, so don’t let the signed ITR-V sit on your desk.
- If you filed step-by-step on the portal and are unsure about any screen, walk through our ITR e-filing guide again — verification is its final step.
- DSC users: register the certificate on the portal well before the deadline; a DSC glitch on the last day is not an excuse the department accepts.
- Expect a reminder, but don’t depend on it. The portal emails you about pending verification — set your own calendar reminder for day 25.
- Verification done? Track the refund. Processing and refunds only start after verification — check status with our refund tracking guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is the time limit to e-verify my ITR after filing?
You have 30 days from the date of transmitting the return on the portal — or from the date of dispatch if you send the signed ITR-V by post. The 30-day rule comes from CBDT Notification No. 5/2022 and applies to all returns filed on or after 1 August 2022.
What happens if I don’t e-verify within 30 days?
The return is treated as filed on the date you finally complete verification, which can convert an on-time return into a belated one. Late fee under Section 234F (Rs 1,000 or Rs 5,000) and interest under Section 234A (1% per month) may then apply. If you never verify, the return is treated as not filed.
Can I e-verify my ITR without logging into the income tax portal?
Yes. On the e-filing portal homepage, click e-Verify Return under Quick Links and enter your PAN, assessment year, acknowledgement number and mobile number. You can then choose Aadhaar OTP, EVC or another method and complete verification without logging in.
What should I do if I miss the 30-day e-verification deadline?
File a condonation request on the portal under Services > Condonation Request. Explain the reason for the delay and attach supporting proof. The Income Tax Department will decide whether to accept the late verification — so apply as soon as you notice the miss, and complete the verification itself first.
Is Aadhaar OTP safe for e-verification?
Yes. The OTP goes only to the mobile number linked with your Aadhaar, works for a single return, and expires within minutes. Just make sure your PAN is linked with Aadhaar and the registered mobile number is active — that is where most failures happen.
Can I use the same OTP or EVC for more than one return?
No. Every OTP or EVC is generated for one specific return and expires quickly. Filing two returns — say, the original and a revised one — means generating a fresh code for each.
